Why Only TEN Commandments?

Another 10C controversy has come down the pike. This time it’s in Giles County, Virginia. Apparently, the School District was asked to remove prints of the 10 commandments from schools, and at first agreed on the advice of their attorney; but then after another School Board meeting at which a large throng of Christians asked that the decision be reversed, it was. So now a law suit will be filed, and the School Board will lose, and attorneys will make a lot of money (not a bad thing by itself 😉 ), and taxpayers will pay that money to them. They never learn.

Do We Look That Stupid?

Calling it a “patriotic exercise,” Flynn said the bill is geared to teach youths about history and principles.

Interesting quote, wouldn’t you say? Could be about anything, and depending on the subject, might be very helpful, very explanatory. But in this case, it’s about a Texas legislator, a Republican, who recently introduced a bill in the Texas legislature that would ensure that any Texas teacher who wants to can display the Ten Commandments in a classroom.

I Get Email

PZ regularly posts some of the crazy email he gets to his blog. I’d love to be able to say I get the same shit, but I don’t. Oh, occasionally some whack job Christian shows up here, and leaves really odd comments (I’m looking at you, Gideon), but they usually do it right on the blog, rarely by email. I’ve gotten a few over the years, but never anything to get worked up about.

Free Speech – Or Just Odd?

A local district justice was charged with … what was it?… oh, yea, disorderly conduct, for passing out nuts in public. Nuts, you say? Well, yes, nuts. Acorns to be exact. The seed of the mighty oak. So what’s wrong with passing out nuts? Well, as it turns out, these particular oak seeds had been hollowed out, and the contents replaced with condoms.  How that was accomplished isn’t clear, but the good Judge provoked the ire of some typical Central Pennsylvania blue hair who complained, and he was promptly cited for disorderly conduct.

Book Burning

I guess I have some obligation to comment on the proposed September 11 Qur’an burning by some low rent superstition peddler in Florida who seems to be seeking his church’s 15 minutes of fame, presumably to increase his membership from 50 to 55.

Aggregator Post

Rather than post one of my rather long winded diatribes on a specific topic, I thought I’d mention a few things I’ve seen and found interesting on other blogs, in the news or elsewhere. So, without further adieu…

The President Should Be An Atheist

With all this talk about whether President Obama is a Muslim or a Christian, as he claims, with Glenn Feckless making an issue of it despite his own Christian ambiguity, with 18% of the electorate believing he’s a Muslim, and with 60% of seemingly lobotomized Republicans using it as a political issue to retake Congress, it seems to me that the Founding Fathers didn’t go far enough defining the required qualifications for the job of President.

That Damned Mosque

It seems that just about everything I read coming out of the mouths of Republicans these day sounds so self-serving, so weaselly, so obnoxious, that I get only the sense that whatever they are saying boils down to one thing, and one thing only – “Vote Republican this November”. I never feel that when they speak, they are trying to voice an honestly held opinion, or are trying to relay facts they believe their constituents and the American people need to have to understand the great issues they are grappling with on a day to day basis. I also get the distinct sense that when their lips are moving I can be assured that they are, in fact, lying. Jaw movement and sound is all I need to confirm prevarication and falsehood.

In The News

Fuckin’ A!

The US Second Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned the FCC’s indecency policy that proscribes, and fines offenders for, fleeting expletives, like the one Bono lit slip during the Golden Globes in 2003. In a unanimous decision the court ruled that the indecency policy was unconstitutionally vague.

…Conviction And Conscience Of Every Man

The sheer and utter ignorance and stupidity of people like Bill O’Reilly and Sarah Palin continues to know no bounds. The former’s stupidity is intentional and contrived, designed to attract ignorant people to his TV program and make O’Reilly and his employer rich. We live in a capitalist economic system, so it’s almost understandable. Almost. It’s all about the almighty buck.
