I’ve been drawn into an interesting discussion on a few other blogs. It started the other day while watching the TODAY show as I dressed for work. Matt Lauer had his panel of “experts” addressing controversial topics of the day, and one of them involved “outsourcing” Christmas obligations, like shopping, card sending etc, and the propriety of doing so. In the course of the conversation, Nancy Snyderman said she didn’t like the religious element of Christmas, in effect, it’s what ruins it for her. It was a short exchange, not well fleshed out, but it was clear there was a disagreement between Star Jones, who felt “Jesus is the Reason for the Season” while Snyderman did not.
If you’re like me, you have a hard time ingesting current news, especially on the political front. The polarization of America is, front and center, the most perplexing aspect of current political discourse. Take for instance this fixation on defeating Obama, making him a “one term President” as Mitch McConnell promised early in his administration, during a time of economic crisis when millions of people were losing their homes, their jobs, and their way of life, and Congress should have been working WITH the President, not against him.
The scary thing is that this is not fiction. It’s actual people who are allowed to vote and procreate.
Although, from the looks of most of them, their procreation days are way behind them.
Check out the flag falling down behind Michelle Bachmann, and how she rushes to pick it up, in order to save it from desecration.
When I was a child I used to have one of those little Jack-in-the-Box toys. Remember them? It was a little square box with a trap door on the top and a grinder on the side I would turn, causing it to play the song “Pop! Goes the Weasel”. When it got to the end of the song, the trap door would pop open on a spring mechanism and a clown would pop out.
I was reminded of my childhood toy when I read this article in Media Matters about FOX News (also known as Fake News, Faux News, Fixed News, Fictional News, False News, Bovine Feces News and numerous other more accurate descriptions.) A former employee of FOX has stated that FOX news is nothing but a propaganda machine.
We recently celebrated the 38th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that helped free American women, to a certain extent, from the servitude of child-bearing. I just discovered that Denmark also legalized abortion the same year.
A recent Danish study of women who both gave birth or had an abortion between 1995 and 2007 has concluded that contrary to one of the myths propagated by the anti-abortion crowd, women who abort have less mental health issues after the procedure than women who actually give birth.
The term is quickly becoming a redundancy. Like hypocritical conservatives.
OK. Let’s just call them Republicans, because that covers all bases.
Rachel Maddow nicely pointed out on her show the other night that there is a conservative cottage industry growing up around using her, and others in the so called liberal media, as fund-raising bait. Take a look.
As we all do, I have friends that fall along a different section of the political spectrum, and we often can have lively conversations concerning politics, religion, current events, etc. Today my wife forwarded some election spam from one of our friends and asked me to respond to it in some way. Here’s the original spam in all its glory, followed by my response to my wife:
This should be read by every democrat and liberal.
The sheer and utter ignorance and stupidity of people like Bill O’Reilly and Sarah Palin continues to know no bounds. The former’s stupidity is intentional and contrived, designed to attract ignorant people to his TV program and make O’Reilly and his employer rich. We live in a capitalist economic system, so it’s almost understandable. Almost. It’s all about the almighty buck.
