Not very often, and most of it is spam, but occasionally I get email that requires some response. Here is one I felt compelled to respond to.

Now this one came, like many of them do, with cute little graphics for each of the countries, and also for each of the nice benefits that illegal aliens get in our country. I didn’t even try to reproduce them here. Doesn’t it sound like something Glenn Beck would write? Or Rush Limbaugh? Notice the beginning implication that Democrats will not agree, but Republicans will?
Can you believe someone would suggest that we be more like Korea, or Afghanistan, or Iran? That we would be better off emulating Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro or Ayatollah Whats-his-face? The people that buy into this also tend to wrap themselves in the Stars and Stripes and proclaim America the greatest country in the history of civilization, but apparently don’t know the meaning of the word hypocrisy.
I received it from a friend who passes on lots of these emails. He tends to agree with most of them, but not always, so I’m not sure if he sent it knowing it would provoke a response, or he actually bought into it. In any event, here was my response:

Not sure I’m following the logic, but OK, let’s take it to it’s logical conclusion.
We’re not happy with our government for treating illegal aliens the way we do, so the solution is to change our government into one run as a divine dictatorship (Korea), or one run by Ayatollahs under Sharia law (Iran), or perhaps one like that run by the Taliban, again under even more repressive Sharia law (Afghanistan), or perhaps a Communist dictatorship (China and/or Cuba), or maybe a crackpot dictatorship (Venezuela) or finally, a divine monarchy (Saudi Arabia).
We’ll have to do away with Congress first, (and not just the Congress people there, but Congress as a legislative entity) then the court system we have, then we’ll have to make sure that all minorities and women are put in their place, (low paying jobs and the kitchen, respectively), then we’ll need to abolish Social Security, Medicare, and all other benefit programs to the poor, mentally challenged and the old. Then, everyone that is retired will have to go back to work, and we’ll have to stop believing in the Christian god and praising either Allah, Buddha or no particular god. Jesus gets thrown out and all church properties should be appropriated by the government. Libraries should close, except those containing copies of the Koran or Das Kapital. Oh, and we’ll have to expel all the Jews.
Life will look a little different for us, but hey, we won’t have those damned illegal aliens around anymore to bug us!

Speaking of hypocrisy, these same idiots will tell you if you speak negatively of the country, “love it or leave it.” If you were to dare say another country does anything better than the US, they’d tell you to move there. Just wanted to make sure I had a firm grasp on the situation.
I think your grasp is very firm PhillyChief. We are the freest country EVAH and we will shut the fuck up or kick the hell out anyone who doesn’t properly appreciate it!

These clods seem to have this bizarre notion that being an illegal immigrant in the United States is some kind of picnic where the immigrant gets everything for nothing and lives better than most middle class Americans.
Many illegal immigrants work in backbreaking, physically dangerous occupations for low pay. They are often abused by their employers because they are afraid of being deported. Even when they are victims of crime they are unlikely to go the police for the same reason.
The funny thing is that illegal immigration, at least from Mexico, has been decreasing in the last few years. There are fewer jobs to pull them here, plus Mexico’s middle class has been expanding, creating more jobs in Mexico. The incentive to pay thousands of dollars to smugglers and cross inhospitable desert has lost its allure. Mexico’s birth rate has also plummeted to barely more than 2 children per family, about the same level as the United States, which means that the reservoir of potential immigrants is also drying up.
I have noted that with some hot button issues that rile the masses, there is often a lag effect wherein the level of outrage over a problem continues and even grows even as the problem starts to fade away. With illegal immigration, where seeing this phenomenon wherein the momentum of the nativist movement is resulting in Arizona type laws even as illegal immigration has been in decline.
And nobody seems to read history. “Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it”. We had a very vibrant yet destructive nativist movement, with whole political parties created over the issue, back in the 1800s. It’s generally seen as a negative aspect of our history, something we should not be proud of, yet here we are, doing the same thing again.
Feh.
The rhetoric most of America is listening to largely involves scapegoating. Blame the non-white, and blame those elite whites who enable the non-whites who are taking your jobs and sucking the govt. tit, not to mention defending them against what those non-whites are due, imprisonment or execution; and, of course, those damn atheists who are eroding our moral fiber.
Let’s not focus on all the actual issues that are causing hardships in our country like the wealthy not paying their fair share of taxes; the erosion of the middle class, education, and our infrastructure; lack of health care reform, lack of oversight on industry and Wall St., favored nation status for China and turning a blind eye to their business practices, not holding companies accountable for outsourcing, Big Oil, Big Pharma, and Big Corn, etc. Oh no, let’s just mindlessly blame the non-whites and their enablers, and oh yeah, France (bunch of fags).
Illegal aliens may be one of the last groups that bigoted Americans feel safe in scapegoating aloud. My experience has been that people who despise illegal aliens often don’t feel any more kindly toward blacks who are “too black” in their speech and demeanor, or Latino American citizens who don’t speak English as well as bigoted white people think they should, or Muslim women who wear head scarves…the list goes on and on. American politics has a space for expressing anti-illegal alien sentiments – and anti-Muslim sentiments – that just doesn’t exist for expressing anti-black sentiments.
